Odd. I thought 'tribology' was the study of surface effects, with particular reference to friction and the theory of lubricants (if 'theory' is the word - it's still very empirical). The word 'nanotribology' was bolted-on with the advent of nanoparticle admixtures in synthetic lubricants.
It is definitely not the sociology and group psychology of retired people.
