A 4.7 is enough to cause minor damage if you're on top of it, so it's not completely trivial.

I was about 15 miles from a 5.6 (nearly an order of magnitude more energy than the UK quake) a few months ago -- I was in mid-forward-roll in the ninjutsu dojo I go to, and basically missed it and was wondering why everyone was running for the door once I was the right way up. No prizes for me for being observant.

Heh. :) That's a pretty funny earthquake story there.

(We thought it was someone stomping around on the roof at first; it took a while for things to start moving where we could see them.)

It's partly to do with the conditions of the ground and buildings beforehand, of course. Some friends of mine down in Folkestone are almost done with the repairwork to their house, from the quake there. The problem was partly that so many other people nearby needed the same sort of repairs done at the same time.
