From the BBC web site:

Heatwave survival advice launched

Guidance on how to cope in a heatwave have been issued by the government's health adviser as the country gears up for hot temperatures...

... Measures, such as staying out of the heat, could cut deaths said Sir Liam.

You know, I'd never have thought to try that, actually.

Heheheh.

So, um, just how hot does it get that a 4 stage plan is needed?

Apparently, Brits are too stupid to stay out of the sun when it gets dangerously hot. I suppose I have a little sympathy, in that whilst, generally speaking, the worst thing likely to happen to someone out of doors is going rusty, so people tend to go nuts whenever the sun comes out and stays out for more than ten minutes.

I've never 'done' heat very well. Spending a summer in California, for me, was a bit of a crazy thing to attempt, but I do seem to have acclimatised much better than I would have expected to. The weather has been consistently perfect every day that I have been here. Some days are (even?) hotter than others, but I've never seen rain. I'm sure this area would be desert without all those damned lawn sprinklers (that somehow manage to randomly turn on *just as* I'm walking past them, sending me three feet in the air in shock)...

That is a good question. In Phoenix Arizona, where I resided previously, it frequently hits 44-45 in the summer. They don't have a plan, other than wear sunblock and drink lots of water. This however pretty much equates to an every day plan as it is in the middle of the desert.
