Yes, pool, not polo. Go me. :)

I looked longingly at the signup lists for more active pursuits, but arthritis fears stopped play. I think someone had their eye on me for women's rugby (by size alone I'd be frightening!), but I avoided it. Still, pool is better than nothing. I might not be up to competetive standard, but I did manage to win a 3 against 1 game the other day against [livejournal.com profile] doseybat, [livejournal.com profile] galliana and [livejournal.com profile] panzerpenguin. :-) I should say that most of them needed to have the rules explained from scratch, so my victory, enjoyable as it was, does need to be seen in some kind of perspective.

Ah, pool. That game I'm really Not Very Good at. Although being not very good at it does need a bit of perspective: I'm continually Slightly Less Good at pool than Tom is, and we've been playing about 3 games a night for 3 months. Not Very Good hasn't been calibrated against people other than Tom for quite a long time...

(Mumble mumble come to my pub and play pool with me. And doseybat bring me my Preacher back because my new housemate wants to read it - he's already read the Ennis and Dillon episodes of Hellblazer...)

I'm Not Very Good at it either. What meagre skill I do have is a consequence of the pool table at Nationwide in Swindon, venue for regular lunchtime games with my coworker, Richard and occasionally our boss (who could paste both of us easily). Richard and I were fairly equally matched, although he beat me more often than I beat him.

Eddies does have a free pool table, but it is in dire need of servicing. To say that it isn't level wood be an understatement -- listing like a Spanish galleon would be closer. The cloth is way past its sell-by date too. I don't suppose you happen to know someone in Cam who fixes pool tables relatively cheaply? I'm thinking of chivvying the CR comittee to put its metaphorical hands in its pocket.

I'm afraid I don't.

I thought "dire need of servicing" was the default state for most pool tables? It certainly is for ours - you can play a shot along a cushion, and watch the ball bounce off the same cushion more than once...

One of the pockets eats balls, the cloth is ripped in at least a holf dozen places, there are no markings on the cloth, the table isn't level, some of the pockets have indentations in front of them that like to attract the balls, etc. Really bad, but like I said, free. :-)
