compilerbitch: HMP Mission Patch (HMP)

Hello, world!

I've been in camp this morning hacking the drill code while the rest of the team moved equipment to the drill site with the Humvee and several ATVs. With luck, we should be drilling this afternoon. My stuff will probably go live tomorrow once the drill has been checked out and is known to be working properly. w00t!

We have the drill well braced, so it's OK. Otherwise, if the bit jams, we don't want the planet whizzing around under us, now do we?

ah... the software engineer turned Queayquecee asks if the drilling is with or in opposition of the rotation of the Earth?

The other issue is that the planet is already whizzing around with us on it so we'd either be tossed off as the angular rate of rotation sped up, or stopped and reversed. Nasty.

I'm enjoying reading of your exploits in the field - well done to you!

It would be more efficient if it were in opposition. That way the Earth would do some of the work. Of course friction would cause the average length of the day to increase slightly and it may have some effect on precession of the equinoxes.

Major problems can be avoided by simply keepin gthe drilling periods short or by setting up a SEP field generator.
