Having only lived in very stable parts of the world, I haven't witnessed an earthquake. I think it would be fascinating to witness one, as long as it's safe, i.e. nothing can fall on my head or collapse from under me.

You may have witnessed an earthquake and not realised it. There was a fair-sized earthquake when my sister was at Keele (which is near the main UK fault line). She'd been in earthquakes before and knew what it was; she was puzzled that other people didn't seem to have noticed it (floor shaking - too much to drink the night before; walls quivering - rub eyes and it goes away; mugs etc falling off shelves - obviously brownies). Next day it was reported in the news and the same people suddenly remembered it happening.

That said, they're nothing like the serious earthquakes where [livejournal.com profile] compilerbitch is now, and I too would like to experience a big one but I doubt it could be made completely safe!

Oh, I'm sure there have been minor quakes where I've been but I meant something with a little more oomph. ;o)
