I went to the doctors this morning to get my (belated) test results. For anyone who doesn't know, I have something arthritis-like that has given me problems most of my life, that started to get worse over the last year or so.

One of the tests came back normal. However, another test (I forget exactly what it was called) aimed at looking for evidence of inflammatory diseases came back positive. The normal range was something like 7 .. 12, and my reading was 17.

I'm therefore being referred to a rheumatologist. I should hear about an appointment within the next couple of weeks.

Sounds like you have something identifiable and quite likely treatable, which I suppose is some consolation. Poor you though.

Any news on the college placement front?

Yes, indeed. It is definitely better to have something tangible, with blood test results that can be waved at people. This will no doubt help in getting treatment.

Of more immediate value, though, is being able to prove I have a problem to the relevant people at Cambridge if I end up in a college that is outside walking range of the computer lab. For me, unfortunately, that's nearly all of them. I can't really do the bicycle thing because my wrists don't like it (and risking carpal tunnel problems is something I'm really not prepared to do), so I'm going to need to persuade the college to allow me to use a car.

On a good day, walking a couple of miles is no problem. But on a bad day (which is pretty reliably brought on by walking a couple of miles on a good day), a few hundred yards can be difficult. If I had to walk into the lab each day, I'd probably be OK for the first day or two, but would get increasing problems after that, so walking is not a realistic option for me.

I rang BOGS again on Friday. Seemingly, my papers are still at Corpus and will continue to be for the next week or so. The DOS there is someone who happened to interview me for my computer lab place, so that might be some advantage. I don't know, though. I was told that if they bounce my application, BOGS will pick a college at random that still has places available, and send my papers there. If that doesn't work out, there is a 'pool' in the first week of August (yes, I know, that's starting to cut it a bit fine) which should result in a place. It's quite frustrating, really, not knowing where I'll be living just 3 months from now.

However, in an attempt at stress reduction I obsessively read every single college's web site while I was off sick last week (dreadful flu bug). I must confess that I really couldn't find a single college I think I'd hate. They all seem to have their compensations. I'd prefer somewhere that can give me accommodation for the whole time, but that's not a major problem. I'm mostly concerned with finding a college that will house me for my first year -- all of them seem to do this, so the only problem might be getting bounced around the BOGS system for so long that the ballots are closed by the time I get a college place.
