Inking was done in Illustrator, paint in Photoshop. It's based on a photo I took at the Eden project in Cornwall last year -- it's a tree with two gourds growing on it.
It started as just a line drawing, but I took a bit of a fancy to it and decided to have a go at painting it in an airbrush style. One of the nice things in Photoshop is that I could keep the line drawing in a separate layer and use the magic wand tool to select areas. Just like airbrushing stencils, but without all the faffing about cutting them to shape in the first place! :-)
I painted the background with a really big diameter brush so that it would look 'out of focus' compared with the tree -- that's probably what mostly makes it look 3D.
