Hi all,

We're having a party here at the Penguin house on Sep 20th (a Saturday) with a view to celebrating my 36th (aaargh) birthday and forthcoming leaving-to-go-to-Cambridge a week or so later.

All are welcome. Bring a bottle. There will be food and music. There will be crash space. There will be interesting conversation. Sarah A will show you her very impressive diodes. I will entertain everyone with a mixture of age-regret, PhD panic and culinary enthusiasm. Penguin will show you his Transformers. Bat will eat any fruit you happen to have about your person. No one will kick in the ceilings or draw moustaches on the Rembrandts. We may get raided by the police at 2am looking for dead bodies. These things happen at parties.

Feel free to turn up on the day any time, but party-proper will be evening onwards. Let me know if you're coming so I can figure out how much food to lay on, but feel free to turn up at the last second on a whim also. Feel free to bring along the squeeze of your choice and/or any interesting and/or decorative hangers-on you may have in your personal entourage.

By train: go to Purley or Purley Oaks. Both are a 10 minute-ish walk, details below.

Purley Oaks: Leave by the side of the station with the car park. Follow the road down the hill. You will come to a crossroads with a Smart Car shop on the corner. Go straight on up the (fairly steep) hill, which is Kingsdown Avenue. No 102 is at the top of the hill, on the right, just after a small green patch. Two Volvos (a 740 and a 960) will be parked outside. The garden is horribly overgrown!

Purley: Either take a taxi from the rank outside or from the minicab place - it should cost about 3.50 - or go on foot. As you come out of the station, turn right and walk past the job centre. Follow the road along - after a couple af hundred yards, it bears left through 90 degrees. Keep following it until you get to the main road (Brighton Road), then turn right. Go straight on at the traffic lights, and take what should be your second left into Montpelier Avenue. Follow that road up the hill, past the school. Keep going until the junction, turn left and keep going up the hill until you get to the junction with Kingsdown Avenue. Turn right, walk about 100 yards and the house is on your left.

By Car: Use a map!

By Plane: From Gatwick, take the train to East Croydon and change for Purley. From Heathrow, take the tube to Victoria and then a train to Purley or Purley Oaks (you may need to change at East Croydon if no direct trains are on the board)

By Helicopter/UFO/Parachute/Cruise Missile/ICBM: N51 20.797 W0 06.380 (WGS84)

If you get lost, ring 0208 7639752. I'm just about to get a new mobile, and will post the number later today. Early in the day, pick ups from the station mop be possible, but ideally let us know a bit in advance.
