Fruit-related chemical burns

Someone in the next-door office brought in a large quantity of fresh limes from his garden. (Yes, it's the middle of winter, but this is California, so I'm not going to start caring that you're all cold and moany now, am I?)

I took a couple.

They looked really nice.

They smelled really nice.

I ate one of them.

I now have chemical burns inside my mouth.

*is stupid*

My sympathy.

I wouldn't call eating one stupid; I probably wouldn't do it myself, because I don't like that much sour all by itself, but [livejournal.com profile] julian_tiger comes to no harm from the bits of lime pulp we let him have.

Why chemical burns? I presume you don't just mean something from the fruit being so acidic, do you?

Wow. Reserve them for putting in gin ;)

Cue 'stupid limey!' jokes from coworkers?

I discovered a couple of years ago that if you cut a kiwifruit in two, leave it for fifteen minutes, and then eat it, it'll make your lips bleed. There's strong stuff in those fruit.
