I'm not sure if anyone has blogged this yet, but given my liking for inappropriately furry objects, this just *had* to get a mention:

Six inches long, pallid white and hairy.

Should I feel jealous?

I suppose I have to be a bit more careful about talking about this kind of stuff nowadays, but this is strictly unofficial (i.e. I'm talking personally, not on behalf of NASA or the USAF).

No, it's not what I'm working on -- my stuff has not flown yet, but it may find its way into real designs eventually. I'm working on satellite architecture these days, which is part of the 'responsive space' concept, i.e. an ability to launch a custom-designed satellite within 6 days rather than the current several years. It's obviously in the same solution space as that rumoured spaceplane, in that it would (for example) allow a spy satellite to be configured and launched unexpectedly.

I've heard rumours of such a spy plane for years, this is nothing new. Code names like Aurora and Blue Eyes come to mind from the research I did for the never-quite-gotten-around-to novel. I have asked people about this, and basically got the reply that after the SR71 was retired, spy satellites essentially took over.

Speaking personally, who knows? My gut feeling says that it is probably just rumour or propaganda, or (more likely) misinterpretation of some other more mundane classified project. I would be delighted to hear that someone had built a fully reusable spaceplane with that kind of configuration, but I have not personally seen any evidence to support it (and have heard a fair bit that doesn't).

For the record, this is all personal opinion, of course.

I saw this on the BBC today, and immediately thought "that's not a real animal! It's a prop mislaid from an old Farscape episode".

Even now I can't quite convince myself it's real, and not some people from b3ta having a laugh.
