I don't think I've read anything of his (Macleod's that is -- I went through a Gibson phase a few years ago) -- can you recommend something?

I've read and enjoyed all of his books, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. His editor at Tor suggests the following order: "Brits and Europeans should start with The Star Fraction. Science fiction aficionados should begin with The Cassini Division. Everyone else should go directly to The Stone Canal." Fair warning: if you're allergic to leftist politics, the books may give you hives. Editor is in the USA, yes, why do you ask? :-)
