Introducing Solo_Knight
I’ve not had the best, err, months.
( The not-so-great adventures of green_knight )
I've handed in my last mss, which was a mess, slept myself out, ordered a new phone, and found a few brain cells; I'll be ok and I try to do better: read DW more often, finish all the half-written entries or dump them completely and free up my stack.
One thing I want to do more of is play RPGs, but again I haven't had the spoons to actually look for a group. So I started to look into SoloRPGs to just broaden my horizons a bit.
I love DnD. I want to play DnD properly again, but even with two people, scheduling is a problem.
So I've started to play solo, and read a lot of materials, and watched a lot of YouTube, ad poked at numerous systems and came to the conclusion that if I want to get anywhere with this hobby, I need to be more systematic about it.
To avoid cluttering up this journal and make it the SoloRPG ALL THE TIME channel, I've created
solo_knight, and to avoid that feeling of emptiness I've waited until I had several entries polished and a format that I think will work.
It's a mixture of play reports and reviews, with the odd deeper delve into mechanics. Right now, my goal is to explore the space as a whole, so I am willing to play a certain amount of games that I would not have picked voluntarily – I mean, science fiction horror survival? Does not sound like fun. (Wasn't fun. Was an experience I wouldn't want to have missed.)
And I'm writing down my experiences so they don't fall out of my brain immediately, I have a modest goal of two games a month, and a stretch goal of processing all of my Indie games by this time next year. (A lot of them are one-page or close to; things I'm going to play once for a couple of hours if at all, but I also have a number of long form games, and on top of that, I have numerous proper RPG systems I'm curious about that can be played with a GM emulator, but in order to do that, I need to be comfortable with emulators first so this will keep me occupied for a while.
So there you go.
solo_knight briefly turns up, bangs on his shield, and vanishes again.
And for a bonus task when my to-do list is shorter, I'll have to see how to link the two accounts so I can switch more easily between them.

blood draw etc.
I woke up at about 7:30 a.m., had a cup of black tea, showered, and went to my doctor’s office for a fasting blood, which I wanted to do before I see her in a couple of weeks. There was a little bit of annoying delay: Mt Auburn Hospital is being moved to a different MyChart system, and some balls are being dropped. Specifically, the order for my lab work wasn’t on the new system, so they had to copy it from the old system, which is in read-only mode for a few weeks, after which it won’t be available even to medical staff. Carmen said her office is going to be sending an email to all patients, advising us to follow up on existing referrals and orders for lab work before the end of the month. I hope that doesn’t miss too many people, but I made a point of telling Adrian about it.
Once they had my test tube of blood, I stopped at a couple of stores on the same block as my doctor’s office, to buy (frozen) ground lamb and some more cannabis edibles. Then I treated myself to an apple, grape, and brie crepe for breakfast, which I ate at an outdoor table. After eating the crepe, I went to CVS and got a flu vaccine, then took the subway home. I am feeling very accomplished, and a bit tired.
The flu and covid tests I mentioned in my previous post arrived yesterday.

Yom Kippur
Content note: mentions antisemitic murders and police violence. I personally am completely safe, I'm only talking about dealing with news.
It's around midday Yom Kippur. I'm leading the morning service with a tiny community in the southwest corner of England. There's a slight hiatus as this congregation only have two Torah scrolls, so we have to roll through from the first reading in Exodus to the second reading in Leviticus, saving the second scroll for the afternoon reading from Deuteronomy. (In this community, like most of the Progressive world, our second reading is Leviticus 19, not the verses that are sometimes used as clobber texts to support homophobia.) While there's milling about, the volunteers running the tech for Zoom approach me at the bimah and let me know that there has been an attack in a synagogue in Manchester.
( reactions ) Also, I am deeply grateful for the kind people who checked in with me personally when they heard the news, and for all the leaders, Muslim, Christian and civic, who sent messages of support to the Jewish community and continue to be in solidarity with us.

covid and flu tests
Bona Fide Masks currently has covid tests and combination flu+covid tests on sale at a good price. With a discount code they sent me, BFM15, I just paid $41 for a total of six covid+flu combo tests (three boxes of two), with free shipping. For both kinds of test, they list the expiration dates. The website is https://www.bonafidemasks.com I've bought KN95 masks from them; this is the first time I've ordered tests from them, but the company has been reliable.
This is probably only relevant to people who live in the US.
I still have a few of the free covid tests we got from the city of Boston last fall, but these tests are well past their expiration dates. The city stopped giving them away over the summer, and I don't know if they're going to restart the program.

Meshtastic
Have been buying and playing. Three LoRa clients installed, waiting to raise one up a pole.

errands and a bit of exercise
For reasons, I ran some errands today so Adrian and Cattitude could stay home.
The main goal was to take a bathrobe to the Zipper Hospital, and ask them to replace the damaged zipper. So I did that, and was surprised by the sign saying they took cash and checks. Cash only would have surprised me less; in practice, I doubt they're being given many checks these days. They want payment in advance, but I had enough cash to cover it, so I didn't need to ask them for the location of the nearest ATM.
I then went to LA Burdick's, for a cup of hot chocolate, and a bag of chocolate-covered orange and lemon peel. The hot chocolate was good, but I spilled some on myself when I opened the takeout cup. So, I drank the hot chocolate, carefully; went to Trader Joe's; and then took the trolley home.
The trip wasn't a huge amount of walking, but it's the most I've done in the last couple of weeks. I did a little PT this afternoon as well; I've been keeping up with that pretty well.

May the bridges I burn light the way for those who come after me.
